Exploring My Creative Journey: From Art Teacher to Art Journaling Enthusiast

Hi! My name is Lindsay, and I am excited to share my creative journey with you! As an art teacher, artist, wife, and mom, art has been a vital part of my life for as long as I can remember. Each brush stroke, pencil mark, and swatch of color has helped shape who I am today, bringing me immense joy and fulfillment.

Art connects us to our emotions, our memories, and the world around us. I love experimenting with various mediums—from pencils and charcoal to watercolors and acrylics. Recently, I have become particularly passionate about art journaling, which has developed into an almost obsessive habit over the last eight years. It’s like a diary filled with colors, patterns, and designs that reflect my inner thoughts and experiences. It's where I escape to relieve stress, express myself, and simply let my creativity play!

Inspiration from Nature

As an artist, I draw significant inspiration from nature. Growing up, my mom tended to beautiful gardens and flower beds surrounding our home. I would spend countless hours observing flowers bloom and watching plants grow, mesmerized by the entire process. Often, I picked up a camera to capture these moments, and would later turn the photographs into drawings or paintings.

This passion for flora and fauna has carried into adulthood. Today, I enjoy nurturing my own plants, both indoor and outdoor. They become a sanctuary for me, where I can unwind, find inspiration, and cultivate my creativity. With around 30 different species combined, the colors and intricate details of the leaves seep into my artwork, adding layers of depth and emotion. Each piece I create feels like a dedication to the environment that has inspired me, making me both blessed and honored.

Embracing the Creative Process

Creating art is not just about the finished piece; it’s about the process. The act of stepping back and letting my creativity flow is incredibly liberating! Sometimes, I feel completely blocked, but I’ve learned to embrace those moments. I remind myself that not every piece has to be a masterpiece. There are times when simply putting paint on a page or doodling a whimsical design can spark the creativity I need to keep going.

Art journaling has given me a unique outlet to explore new ideas without the pressure of perfection. Each page is like a little adventure—some are light and joyful, while others might be more somber or reflective. The beauty lies in the freedom to experiment with different materials and techniques. For instance, I often layer watercolors with acrylics and use mixed media to create textures inspired by the earth and sky. This process has enhanced my skills and deepened my emotional connection, allowing me to express my feelings visually. You will also notice that butterflies and other garden insects are a personal favorite and appear often, reflecting a light and playful spirit.
